Luxery hotel Camino Real in the colonial Oaxaca, Mexico
Colonoial Camino Real hotel in downtown Oaxaca

To better appreciate Oaxaca's cultural history we invite you to stay in our hotel which has been a part of that history for centuries.

As you might already know, the five star Camino Real Oaxaca is unique in all of México. We are honored to be housed in this former convent of Santa Catalina with 91 rooms on two floors. Built in 1576, it is a grand colonial property, meticulously restored to retain its former grace. Spanish Baroque architecture and authentic colonial touches will take you back to earlier times in Oaxaca.

Walk down our long tiled corridors with their fading original frescoes and you can hear the faint sound of Gregorian chant in the air as you discover our several sun-splashed courtyards and flower filled patios and gardens. Explore our courtyards and walkways that are bursting with bougainvillea; archways with the warm morning sun glistening through them; gardens with fountains that quietly trickle - echoing the bird song you'll hear throughout the hotel. The setting is peaceful, relaxed and exudes a natural tranquillity and elegance.

Our rooms are generally large with high beamed ceilings, stucco walls, queen or double beds, cable TV, air-conditioning and fans, telephones and large modern bathrooms with walls of beautiful Mexican tiles. All rooms are tastefully decorated with native weavings and Oaxacan crafts.

World's Best Places To Stay

This four centuries old ex-convent of Santa Catalina (declared an historic monument by UNESCO) is located conveniently about 4 blocks from the main square (the zocalo) and is close to shopping, dining, museums and galleries.

Some guests find the rooms on the second floor to be more pleasant. Others prefer the ground floor: to walk out of their room into one of the many garden courtyards. One of the larger patios, with the beautifully carved, stone basin in the center, is called Los Lavaderos (the laundry); it’s where the Dominican sisters of the convent used to wash clothes by hand using water from the city's aqueduct.

The old convent of Santa Catalina has adapted to its role as a hotel, without sacrificing its original style and grace. A romantic feeling still lingers in the charming courtyards and small enclosed patios. This is definitely for those who want to bathe in the ambiance of ‘luxurious authenticity’. The addition of a beautiful courtyard-enclosed swimming pool, breakfast buffet in the garden and the weekly Guelaguetza dinner-show celebration all add up to a magnificent blending of old and new; the pairing of simplicity and elegance.

There are certainly other fine hotels in Oaxaca, but of course none compare with the Camino Real. We offer our guests the opportunity to enrich their stay in this historic city, adding even greater vacation pleasure.

The attention to detail is inspiring and a stay at the Camino Real in Oaxaca perfectly complements the first-class colonial experience of
the city itself.

Represented by the Oaxaca Hotel Group and managed by Camino Real Hotels, it remains under the auspices of the National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH) and is designated a national treasure.

Welcome to Camino Real Oaxaca

All of the rooms in our hotel are decorated in a tasteful, colonial style and feature traditional high ceilings. Like the rest of the building, wooden beams support exposed terracotta ceiling tiles. The original floor tiles have been retained and restored where possible; each room offers air conditioning and fans, as well as the modern facilities you would expect from a hotel of this quality. Everything is carefully interwoven and integrated so as not to spoil the original colonial style.

Camino Real Oaxaca is housed in one of Mexico’s 'Colonial Estate Treasures'. It is owned and cherished by the people of Oaxaca. Represented by the Oaxaca Hotel Group, and managed by Camino Real Hotels, it remains under the auspices of the National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH) and is designated a great national treasure.

The colonial building is the ex-convent of Santa Catalina built by the Spanish as a nunnery. During its role as a convent, it attracted over 400 nuns.

There are certainly other fine hotels in Oaxaca, but of course, none compare with the Camino Real. We offer our guests the opportunity to enrich their stay in this historic city, adding even greater vacation pleasure.

ARCHITECTURE
Oaxaca is one of the cities in Mexico with the richest of cultural traditions and an abundance of historic monuments.
One such monument is the Ex-Convento de Santa Catalina de Siena, a colonial building which is now Hotel Camino Real Oaxaca.
In 1972, a team of experts undertook the job of restoring the frescoes that adorned the walls of what were previously rooms and halls. The floors were reconfigured according to the original architecture and they attempted to restore a part of the artistic treasures that this great building once harbored.
In this singular hotel, many of its ancestral walls still allow one to admire the frescoes that adorned them originally.
Its hallways, arches, fountains, as well as the Jasmine aroma of its patios and gardens create a special atmosphere that can transport you to a previous era, when time moved slowly.
Camino Real Oaxaca is a jewel property for Camino Real Hotels, for the people of Oaxaca, and for Mexican people who are proud to share it with the rest of the world.
